Irina Gendelman takes updated photos of graffiti in an alley in the University District of Seattle, Washington on October 18, 2006. The piece had been partially buffed, or repainted. Gendelman, a Communications graduate student at the University of Washington, co-founded Urban Archives, an image database of urban communication from cities around the world whose main mission is to record urban texts, like graffiti, public art and signage, that can quickly disappear. Gendelman has focused her research on political graffiti and the policy issues surrounding this controversial art form.
