Eradicated by hunting by 1910, elk were reintroduced in small numbers from Yellowstone (1947) and Jackson Hole (1964) to the Jemez Mountains by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. The preserve is now an important breeding, grazing and calving ground for around 3,000 elk. Hunts are held each year, awarded by a competitive lottery.
